The park is a prominent black buck conservation area in the country. This deer park was once part of Shikarghar of former rulers of Hyderabad where black bucks, cheetals, chinkara, leopard and a verity of birds abounded. The floura & fauna had dwindled due to destruction of forest with rapid expansion of Hyderabad city. The park extended over 3605 acres was notified as national park on 5-10-1994 to preserve the precious heritage and to rehabilitate the endangered species like black buck, the state animal of Andhra Pradesh.
The park area comprises of dry deciduous forests with scrub, grasslands, rocky out crops etc. Some of the prominent plant species are sandal wood, teak, flame of the forest, neem, ber, seethaphal, terminalias, acacias etc.
The fauna include, black buck, cheetal, wild boar, monitor, lizards, mangooses, porcupines, hares, snakes etc. the park is a paradise for bird watchers. Birds like partridges, quails, lapwings, sunbird, egrets, ducks, peacocks, doves, birds of prey like kites, vultures etc. are abundant.
The safari is open on all days except Monday from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. with facilities like:
- Environmental education center to impart nature education.
- Nature trails & camps, Safari drive etc.

Uniqueness : The perfect habitat for the endangered Black buck in the city of Hyderabad.
Forest Type : southern tropical dry deciduous forests with predominantly teak, Rose wood, Zizyphus spp, Carissa caranda etc. It also consists of dry rockey scrub jungle and grasslands.
About : the peacock, acts as a carbon sink, reducing the pollution and providing pure oxyzen to the citizens of Hyderabad. A perfect habitat for the endangered Black buck, this forest also harbours a verity of wildlife within.
History: This area in the past was classified as “Kancha”- meaning grassland or garaging area was a famous hunting ground for the ancestors of the royal family. The forest was abound with animals like Black buck , Chinkara , has disappeared and leopard too is an occasional visitor to the forest. Forest department took over this area from the Nizam of Hyderabad by purchasing this land as well as 13 such “Kanchas” in the city.
Andhra Pradesh forest development corporation ltd. has developed ECO-tourism center at the park which was inaugurated on 18th May, 2005 providing cozy and serene stay for the visitors.
